Fasting & Prayers

Fasting Is Not Punishment. It Is Positioning.

Fasting is a posture of surrender that helps us humble the flesh, draw closer to God, and align ourselves with God's will.

"Even now," declares the LORD, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning."
    Joel 2:12

Joel 2:12 sets the posture of fasting. Fasting is returning. Fasting is realigning. Fasting is repositioning. God does not call us to a display. He calls us back to Himself, and He calls the whole heart.

    The Goal

    The Goal of Fasting

We humble the flesh so our hearts can become more sensitive, more yielded, and more responsive to God. Fasting clears distractions, confronts the desires of the flesh, and creates space for us to seek God with greater focus.

    "LORD, I decrease. You increase."

"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up."
    James 4:10

    Fasting is humility in action.

Fasting is not starvation. It is spiritual alignment.

    Three Reasons

    Why We Fast

    To Draw Closer to God

    Matthew 6:16–18

Jesus taught His disciples about fasting as a spiritual discipline. Fasting removes noise and distractions. It creates greater focus and intimacy with God. It turns our attention away from being seen by people and toward seeking God Himself.

To Bring the Flesh Under Submission

    Galatians 5:16–17

The flesh and the Spirit are in conflict. Fasting gives us an opportunity to practice saying no to the flesh and yes to God. It helps us confront cravings, habits, distractions, and desires that compete with obedience, and it helps us become more yielded to the Spirit.

    To Seek God for Direction

    Acts 13:2

The early church prayed and fasted while ministering to the Lord, and the Holy Spirit gave direction. Fasting does not force God to speak. It helps us quiet distractions and intentionally seek God for wisdom, clarity, direction, and instruction. It prepares our hearts to listen.

    Three Steps

    How We Fast

    2

Replace That Time With Prayer and the Word

Do not simply remove something from your schedule. Replace that time with prayer, Scripture, worship, and seeking God's presence.

"Fasting without prayer is just a diet."

"Fasting without the Word is weak."

If you do not pray, you are only starving your body. Prayer is what turns the act of fasting into an intentional practice of seeking God.

    3

    Be Intentional

Fasting is deliberate. We do not fast accidentally. We choose to set ourselves apart to seek God. It is not about how long we can go without food. It is about how intentionally we pursue God.

    Prayer + Fasting

How Prayer and Fasting Work Together

    Prayer is the engine.

    Fasting is the sacrifice.

    The Word is the foundation.

God is the One we seek.

Fasting Is Not Punishment. It Is Positioning.

Return to God with all your heart.

    Joel 2:12
